If you have lived in Korea for a long time, you know that certificates are often used in Korea, for log-in purposes or for payment authorization. In another article, we talked about the 공동인증서(구 공인인증서) Digital Certificate or Digital signature if you are interested in that one, then check that article, however, today we will talk about Kakao and Naver certificates. Those are pretty similar, and most governmental websites do use them to log in.
Let's see what these two mean, and how to activate and use them!
Kakao Talk certificate (카카오 인증)
The KakaoTalk wallet contains certificates, ID cards, and simple payment information. KakaoTalk wallet can be found in the KakaoTalk More tab (3 dots in the lower bar), when you open it, it will be the above-written Wallet.
Before you may use the wallet, you must agree to the terms and conditions and confirm your identity. Kakao certificates, different credentials, and ID cards are all kept in the wallet. In cases where personal identity, authentication, and digital signature are necessary, users can utilize the Kakao certificate in the wallet instead of the existing public certificate.
After you have activated your bank, next to the wallet will be a certificate sign, that you can press. When you press it, you have to agree with the terms and conditions and then put in your phone number. You will receive a code to input. After inputting the code, the certificate will be given to you. Keep in mind that you will have to have a phone number on your own name (the same as on your ID card, Bank, and passport), the ID card, and also activate the wallet on Kakao Talk.
To use it, when you login into some application, you will receive a message on Kakao Talk. You have to press on the message which will open a panel with your own information and credentials. Agree with the terms and conditions and then press 인증 they will confirm your information and you will be able to go back to the website and log in.
The certificate will expire at a certain time, the time is written on Kakao Talk when you press on the certificate icon in the More Tab menu.
The certificate includes your name, date of birth, and expiration date.
Naver Certificate
This certificate works in the same way, however, instead of making a wallet first, you will need to verify your identity.
This will be fairly quick if you are already in Korea and have a valid Korean phone number obtained through your ARC (Alien Registration Card).
Go to Naver and sign in, if you don't have an account, you can make one very easily here.
Go to your Account Info and select "Edit" from the drop-down menu.
Select "Verify" from the drop-down menu.
To proceed with phone number verification, select Phone (휴대폰), check the agreement box, and click the Confirm (확인) button.
In the pop-up box, complete the form.
Check all of the Terms and Agreement elements, fill in the blanks as needed, and make sure to select Foreigner (외국인).
Choose your phone provider, enter your phone number, and then click the certification (인증) button to request a verification code through text message. Click confirm (확인) after entering the verification code in the "Certification Number" field.
To make your certificate
Go to the Naver website, after logging in, https://ekyc.naver.com/home/main the 인증서 page will open.
When the page opens press 인증서 발급하기
Then, agree to the Terms and Conditions
Input your name, phone number and press the button (재요청)
After receiving the number by message input, it and press Confirm (확인)
To use it, you will need the phone password, fingerprint, or other forms of confirmation that you use.
To use it, when you want to log in press on the message then check the terms and conditions box and then verify your name and information and press confirm (확인), then go back to the page and the login is done.
These types of logins will be used very often, on different websites, so make sure to have at least one of them!
