Updated: Apr 26, 2022

Resident tax for foreigners in Korea, pay taxes

"Local tax” refers to taxes paid by all the residents (including international ones) of Seoul collected by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to provide various services such as better resident welfare and local environmental improvements, etc.

Some of the local taxes include residence tax, automobile tax, acquisition tax, and local income tax.

Among the local taxes, residence tax must be paid every August, and automobile tax must be paid every June and December. You will receive the bill in your post office, where you live. All foreign residents must pay local taxes. Otherwise, their visa extension will be restricted.

What if I fail to pay local taxes?

Your wages, savings, rent deposit, and insurance payment may be seized or your properties (realties, automobiles, etc.) may be put to public sale.

You may be restricted in extending your visa or government-licensed businesses.

In particular, if you fail to pay automobile tax, your license plate may be impounded without a warrant.

Immigration officer checks tax overdue information sent from relevant authorities. When a person is found to have overdue taxes, the official will induce him/her to clear the overdue taxes to have their visa extended normally. Failure to pay taxes will restrict visa extension. (Extended only up to 6 months in principle)
